Hello, cutey ...

Well, with the arrival of the svelte MacBook (see the new userpic) I suspect my iBook may soon be retired. The big decision is whether to get the MacBook before getting an iMac to replace my sick desktop PC (I know, I know. Never buy the first release, but it's sooo cute).

Time for a Wii

The next-generation formerly known as the Nintendo Revolution will now, apparently, be called the Wii (pronounced "we"). With a name like that, I think it's going to have the piss taken out if it something chronic (quite literally, given the meaning of "wee" in English). So it's going to be a three-horse race: The X-Box 360, the Playstation 3 (PS3) and the Wii.

Sorry, but I just can't take that seriously. I mean, who the hell did their Market Research ...

Yuri's Night

Wow. It's 45 years ago today that Yuri Gagarin made the first manned spaceflight, and 25 years ago today that the first shuttle boosted into orbit. According to here there are celebrations in a number of places.

I'm too young (by about eight years) to recall Gagarin's flight, but I do remember Crippen and Young's flight - we'd had classes gathered to watch the original launch date on April 10, but the postponed launch was a Sunday and I was at home. It's one of my "flash memories", one of those times you can recall where and what you were doing. Things like the death of Kenedy (for those old enough), the SAS assault on the Iranian Embassy, the fall of the Berlin Wall, Mandela's release, the death of the Queen Mother, etc. Sadly, hearing of Columbia's destruction on 1 February 2003 is also one of the things I recall clearly (I was walking from the Tate Modern to the Whitechapel gallery with my friend Béa).

In Memoriam John Spencer

When you see this in someone's LJ, quote Leo McGarry:

"Seventeen across. Yes. Seventeen across is wrong. You're spelling his name wrong. What's my name? My name doesn't matter. I'm just an ordinary citizen who relies on the Times crossword for stimulation. And I'm telling you, that I've met with the man twice, and I've recommended a preemptive Exocet Missile attack against his airforce. So, I think I know how to..." - Pilot

New purchases

I paid a trip to Lisure Games on Saturday and picked up Exalted Second Edition. A fine looking book - I'm wondering if this means they'll be revising my contribution to that like, Exalted: The Lunars?

In other news: I'm trying my damndest to get the novel finished, but work has thrown a spanner in the works: We have one person out on family business, anothers' computer has blown up (I blane the weekend's network upgrade). That leaves yours truly to cover everything and *another* later night. ARGHH!!

Fighting fires

The problem with playing MMORPGs is that sometimes things go completely pear-shaped.

Several years ago I used to play Star Wars Galaxies and both my main characters were through acrimonious guild collapses. I'd thought to avoid that playing World of Warcraft since I group with people I know in real life, but after a rather disastrous adventure yesterday tempers got frayed, words were said and two if not three of the group have quit. I was a bystander to the whole thing, not involved in the rows and quitting, but have been sucked into the aftermath as a result of the guild leader (one of those involved) deciding to pass the responsibilities on to me. Others' desire for information as to what happened has lead to both sides venting on the guild mailing lists, and I'm piggy-in-the-middle. Joy. Time to keep my mouth shut and let tempers cool, I think (and pray the involved parties chill out too).

And the ironic thing: We had a guild social event to celebrate a year of the guild's existence ...
